Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow

These conditions cause pain around the elbow area that can be an annoying and debilitating injury to manage.

Tennis elbow – lateral epicondylitis – creates pain on the outside of your elbow and is an inflammatory response to the overuse of muscles and tendons in your forearm that extend your wrist. This usually has a slow onset with pain increasing over a period of time.

Golfers’ Elbow – medial epicondylitis – causes pain on the inside of your elbow and again is an inflammatory response caused by an overuse of the muscles that flex and twists your wrist and fingers down.
Both of these conditions can cause a weakness in your grip strength which can be problematic in a number of situations, including lifting pots and pans off the stove, using door handles or pouring out a kettle of boiling water!

These are not just isolated to people who play the above sports. In the days before cordless screwdrivers and nail guns we would see carpenters and electricians also presenting with these problems due to the repetitive nature of their jobs.

There is a variety of treatment options for Tennis Elbow or Golf Elbow including:

  •  Soft Tissue Therapy (Remedial Massage)
  • Dry needling
  • Kinesio taping
  • Stretching
  • Movement alterations

You can also look at how you are performing the actions that are creating these problems, and a great way of diagnosing this might be organising some tuition for stroke correction for your golf swing or your tennis backhand.
